The board on the left is an 8’0 for me, packing in the bulk I got out of my 9’1 without the fear factor of not being able to duckdive. Nothing worse than being caught inside at Aileen’s, except maybe that last thought running through your head being, ‘if I could’ve buried my board into this heaving face, I could have avoided getting waxed… arrggghhh’.

With that all in mind, the cut out blank on the right is aiming at the same thing, with a little more length and thickness – all the blank has – combined with a slightly straighter outline, wide point marginally forward of mid and increased width forward to really optimise paddle for Mark Killeen.

Two plus one

Been messing around with my fin configs.

This new board is like a trimmed down son-of-bob, but set up with the fin box to get away from quad surfing, which was killing off my muscle memory on thruster equipment. I guess it all stemmed from riding a bonzer shaped by Elvis that had amazing speed, carry and control, and still a wiff of thruster around the lip.

Scored some beautiful overhead surf this week and used the 6 1/2″ bonzer centre at 6 1/2″ and the small basey sides I made for the 6’5 pin at 12″. Absolutely sold on the speed / flow and connectedness off the bottom, toe side, but need to work on getting the heel side more anchored.

You dig?

For all of you who knew this place as it was, this is not a pretty picture

Aileen template for 2014

This one is for Matt Smith. Just trying to loose a bit of length while maintaining paddle and scoopability for Matt to hook in on the nasty ones out under those cliffs.
